THE police chief confident in Stow flying arrest

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles police chief Thursday expressed confidence that its investigators have arrested the right person as the main suspect in the brutal beating of a fan of the Giants in San Francisco at Dodger Stadium, but he said that a case is presented to prosecutors until there is an "abundance" of the evidence.

The arrest of Giovanni Ramirez, 31, came weeks after beatings, and almost a week has passed with no charges filed.

Bryan Stow, 42, wore clothing giant for the season opening game between San Francisco and Los Angeles and was beaten into a coma in an attack in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium after the match. Police said that Stow was attacked by two men who fled in a car driven by a woman.

Police are still looking for the woman and the second attacker.

The beating shocked Los Angeles and has triggered a wave of victim assistance and donations to a reward Fund. He also raised a campaign billboard showing sketches of the two assailants. The Ministry of police has launched a major security beef-up to the games of the Dodgers.

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office is reviewing the arrest of Giovanni Ramirez, the suspect in the beating of San Francisco Giants' fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day, a spokeswoman for the D.A.'s office said Monday afternoon.

Ramirez, 31, who has two prior felony convictions, was booked Sunday evening on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He was apprehended in an early-morning raid by LAPD SWAT officers at an East Hollywood apartment complex after an intense, seven-week manhunt.

Police said that a tip from Ramirez's parole officer was the key break in the case.

The police generally have 48 hours after an arrest to bring information related to the case to the D.A.'s office, which then reviews the information and decides whether to file charges. Ramirez remains in custody on a parole hold, the spokeswoman said. Bail is set at $1 million.

Because the Los Angeles Police Department continues to investigate the March 31 beating of Stow, the D.A.'s office said it would have no further comment.

Stow remains in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital.

The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Stow's attackers grew to over $250,000 after the Dodgers committed an additional $100,000 earlier this week. The reward is still being offered, as police continue their investigation.

Sister of the Stow said police called his family Sunday morning to inform them of search warrants.

"I cannot even say the emotions that we are now thanks to," Bonnie Stow told KABC-TV, sometimes choking back tears. "To be excited is the least we can say.".
