NEW YORK - Carolina Panthers opened the last day of the draft by selecting Virginia cornerback Brandon Hogan to begin the fourth channel.
The Panthers completed another their many needs by making the leader of the defence of Virginia, that choose the 98th overall. Hogan is the 14th cornerback taken together.
A wild week of the NFL continued Saturday, with players still locked after a brief respite Friday. That night, however, a decision of the Court of Appeal allowed the League to reinstate the lockout which had been lifted earlier in the week.
But peaks continue to come as the project is protected under the old collective agreement, which expired on March 11.
The Minnesota Vikings, who have seven picks the last day of the draft, selected Iowa defensive tackle Christian Ballard with the ninth choice in the 106th round, fourth overall.
Ballard, 6-foot-3, 283 books, is that the first coach again player defensive Leslie Frazier, a former defensive coordinator, was chosen in the project. With Kevin Williams to a suspension of four-game after a test has failed, it could add depth to the position and Pat Williams free agent.
The Vikings took quarterback Christian Ponder in the first round Thursday and Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph in the second round Friday. They did not have a third round choice because they exchanged in New England for Randy Moss.
The Arizona Cardinals surprised their fourth round pick, Texas outside linebacker Sam Acho, simply by choosing him.
Acho, whose parents emigrated from Nigeria, said that he had not heard the Cardinals in "a few months" and did not know they were interested in him.
Acho, foot-6-1, 257 pounds, recently was named top scholar-athlete the nation by National Football Foundation College & Hall of Fame.
