Rockies lose De La Rosa to the torn elbow ligament

DENVER - Pitcher Colorado Jorge De La Rosa left the mound in the first game of humming Tuesday against Arizona when it became apparent that something was wrong.

He returned to the hospital with bad news just before the Rockies took the field for the Claude Chabrol: he is lost for the season with a ligament torn in his left elbow.

An MRI revealed De La Rosa, best pitcher in the Rockies this season, has an ulnar collateral ligament tear. Tendon replacement surgery will need Tommy John-style, a procedure which will be relegated the left-hander throwing hard for a year.

La Rosa was left the game with a spell, two runners on and the number 1-1 on Chris Young in the third.

"As has progressed it it has become more evident that there was something wrong." I thought that maybe it was a problem of blister or nail, "receiver Chris Iannetta said." "I went out and spoke to him and he is not really its good." I saw his behaviour while he was receiving signs and said enough is enough. ?

La Rosa assumed that he had just tightness in his elbow and Manager Jim Tracy leave him take a practice field but hoisted as soon as he saw him grimace.

"He said I would like to keep tongue." OK, we'll throw a lot and see what it looks like,' "Tracy told."Well, I watched very closely when he threw and I have to see was the expression on his face when he turned the loose ball and I said, "that's all." "

La Rosa a top pitcher in the Rockies with a 5-2 record and a 3.51 ERA. Sometimes off the coast of his first career complete game when he is injured.

Iannetta said that he "(De La Rosa) gave him a hug and said I'm sorry," when he heard the news.

"There was not much time to talk." "He loves baseball and he loves this team," said Iannetta. "It is obviously extremely upset about it." It is a difficult loss but everybody gotta step up. ?

With Ubaldo Jimenez, still seeking his first victory, De La Rosa had been rock of the Rocky Mountains.

"It was a large part of our team," said Greg Reynolds, who won the first game in relief. "There is not too many guys who have things like Jorge." Someone will have to intensify. If it is me, I will be ready for the challenge. If I am selected to fulfill its role, I'll give it everything I have and I will be ready for it. ?

Aaron Cook (fractured finger) is set to come off the coast of the DL 60 days on 30 may, although if he makes his final rehab start Saturday it will be not ready to return until the first week of June.

The Rockies are a resilient bunch, Tracy said, pointing their waves last season when closer Huston Street started on DL, player All-Star Game Troy Tulowitzki missed 40 games with a wrist fracture and even De La Rosa has missed two months with a finger injury.

"Obviously, it's a success," said Tracy. "I can tell you this right now." We must move forward and find ways. We have previously made. ?

"It is devastating, said Jason Giambi." He had a phenomenal year for us, too. I feel terrible for the kid. It was really assembling. "That is happening in baseball and now we have to bring together".
