Haas (8-under 64) seizes lead at Wells Fargo

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--De all time Bill Haas played Quail Hollow, he never had a round quite like this.

Haas had without stress birdies on the 5 s and fact little wrong on the rest of the holes Thursday in the Wells Fargo Championship, matching the tournament record more low opening round with an 8 - under 64 for a advance of two shots.

"I have good feelings around this place," said Haas.

It was his best shots score four at Quail Hollow on the PGA Tour and way better than two dozen rounds, he played as a kid when he would tag with his father, Jay Haas, special trips to the course.

Haas was ahead by two shots on David Toms and Jonathan Byrd, who had a 66 in the morning when he was barely above 40 degrees at the start of the tournament with a North wind is rare for this tournament.

Ultimately, the afternoon proved perfect - as many of the Haas and turn.

He had a few stops by keys, such as the putt from 10 feet, he made the turn on the 18th hole. However, the key for Haas, was off the coast to a good start on nine slightly more severe back and knowing that he could afford to make a few mistakes.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy made a few mistakes at the beginning, and it has recovered never enough. In his first trip to America after the collapse of his Sunday in the Masters, 22-year-old Ireland in North opened with a 75.

"The story of the day for me is that I really did not hit it very well, which is unlike me", said McIlroy. "It would be the strength of my game and today I just wasn't striking it well." My timing was just a little bit. ?

Pat Perez and Lucas Glover were at 67, while Rickie Fowler overcame a rough start - two bogies on his opening three holes - to lead a group at 68 that included Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby.

Phil Mickelson, in his first event since the Masters, hit two balls in the water level 5 s and scrambled for by each time. The first was critical. It was already 1 on for the tournament through six holes when he came the straw from pine and pond at no. 7. He punched a putt from 12 feet by, then made birdie on four holes.

It has wound up with a 69, with Padraig Harrington.

"I had not played in a few weeks, and to turn under the by, has been a good start," Mickelson said. "It could have been much better, could have been much worse. I'll certainly take it. ?

Cold air Quail Hollow play even longer in the morning, and it was particularly hard on the guys who do blast it. TOMS fits in this category, which explains why he had hit the fairway metals for his second shot on three by 4 s. The good news is he on each of them and threw in seven birdies for a 66.

"It was cold that this morning and we y with our jackets and sweaters and play these long by 4 s", said Toms. "If I take 3 slot on the front nine, until he played, I'll take that any day.".

TOMS won the first edition of this tournament in 2003.

Byrd rarely plays well here. Except for a tie for fifth a few years ago, he missed the cut in his other five appearance. He is almost thought about skipping the Wells Fargo Championship, except that it is close to its roots in South Carolina.

"It's strange," said Byrd, who opened the year with a victory in playoff at Kapalua. "" If it is not close to home, I could begin to say, ' I just play well, I need to go home. "" But my family is close to home here at Columbia, South Carolina, and is not far from Clemson. They just strike out the Park in this golf tournament, and is a tournament that I missed. ?

Haas Miss, either - not now, certainly not as a kid. He grew up in Greenville, s.c., while his father was a member and they often made the 90 mile drive in the quail hollow.

"My father would say," Let's go play quail tomorrow ".". "It was a big deal that fair play at home", he said.

Haas personalities it plays some 30 towers before turning pro. He also has fond memories of the time, he played the tournament with his father, older brother (Jay Jr.) and uncle (Jerry Haas).

And yet, nothing compares to play and do for both of the birdies.

Haas has opened his round with a 3-wood on the 10th green for a two-putt birdie and a railway from 7 to 15 feet, 12, which played as the second toughest hole in the opening round. Then comes a birdie from 30 feet on 14, and a simple up-and-down 15 by-5 for a birdie front bunker.

He knew that the chances for birdie on the front with two by 5 s, and he made birdie, too.

Haas tinkering with a putter belly at Hilton Head a few weeks ago, because the Greens are flat. He was back in a classical putter on the quail CONTOURED Greens hollow and liquidation to its share of them.

"Although row", he said, "which leads to everything."
