George Mason Patriots tab former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coach Paul Hewitt to replace Jim Larranaga

FAIRFAX, Virginia. - Paul Hewitt is new male basketball at George Mason coach.


Former Georgia Tech coach was hired Saturday to replace Jim Larranaga, who left this month for the University of Miami.


Hewitt was fired by the Yellow Jackets last month. He went to 190-162 to 11 years in school and only 72-104 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hewitt coach Georgia Tech for the 2004 national title game, losing against Connecticut to San Antonio 82-73.

Hewitt receives a redemption of 7.2 million dollars over five years from Georgia Tech, making it more affordable for a school such as George Mason of the Colonial Athletic Association.


Former Sports Director of Georgia Tech Dave Braine signed Hewitt to the agreement with Georgia Tech paying Hewitt. Georgia Tech has hired Brian Gregory Dayton to replace Hewitt.


Sports Director of George Mason Tom O'Connor said ESPN.com that Hewitt has agreed to a five year contract with the package of total remuneration comparable to that which has been provided to Larranaga when he plans to leave for Miami. This package is estimated at about a 1 million per year in a "good year" when all the bonuses are met.


O'Connor said redemption of $ 7.2 million of Hewitt he receives from Georgia Tech had no impact on the negotiation.


"We were in a market for a basketball coach and we wanted to ensure our compensation was in line," said O'Connor.


An official of Georgia Tech said Andy Katz of ESPN.com that contract of Georgia Tech Hewitt had no offset should he take another job. Hewitt will receive the full redemption of the Yellow Jackets, an approximate audit of $130,000 per month for the next five years.


Hewitt will meet Sunday night with players and be presented at a press conference on the campus of George Mason Monday at 2 pm.


O'Connor said he was not concerned that Hewitt had been fired at Georgia Tech. He said that Hewitt talked to him control of the last two seasons.


O'Connor said that he had gotten to know Hewitt over the past five years, while Hewitt was an active member of the National Association of basketball coaches and while O'Connor was men's basketball NCAA tournament selection Committeeincluding a year as President.

O'Connor said that Hewitt was not the only coach interviewed for the position. O'Connor was talking about Rhode Island coach Jim Baron, O'Connor had known for years.


O'Connor said that Hewitt has launched the interest for the position.


"He told us that if he would stay in coaching then he wanted that it is a program where he knew he could be successfully like ours," said O'Connor.


O'Connor did not hire a research firm.


"I was research," said O'Connor. "I knew that as soon as I had brought Paul to meet everyone here that he was all - on campus and in the community." It is a great human being. I felt that it had all the tools to succeed. I know it is a large x and o guy but it all. ?


O'Connor said ESPN.com Larranaga left for Miami that he wanted to hire a new coach quickly, especially with an experienced roster.


The Patriots are the Favorites of Colonial Athletic Association of consensus for the next season and a team of top-25 pre-season expected. Hewitt is a better team in 2011-2012, as the Yellowjackets are expected to finish near the bottom of the ACC.


Hewitt had experience coaching at a conference outside of the six power when he was the head coach to his own.


Hewitt has been a staunch member of NCAA coaches training. At least an ACC coach told ESPN.com that Hewitt was the most ardent to push the new rule project NBA which is out of the ACC and was adopted in April by the Legislative Council of the NCAA and the Board of Directors.


The new rule of NBA draft calls for underclassmen to declare for the draft by April 10, 2012, without a period to test NBA draft process. The present rule gives underclassmen a period of two weeks to test from April 24 to May 8, 2011.
